Gene's work has been exhibited in shows at the University of Minnesota, the New York Museum of Folk Art, and the Hedmark Museum in Hamar, Norway. In 2002 he and his wife Lucy received the Prairie Star, Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council highest award for artistic achievement for their collaborative work in ceramics.

Gene also makes traditional Norwegian knives, and is a gold medal recipient of the Vesterheim Museum Handwork competitions, along with several Best of Show awards. He has taught knifemaking classes at the Vesterheim Museum, Milan Village Art School and at the Northhouse Folk School in Grand Marais Minnesota.
